Why We Are Hooked on 'Shrooms at Consonant
Something that we have been obsessed with at the Consonant office lately is mushrooms. No we are not talking about magic mushrooms, or your average Portobello. We are talking about medicinal mushrooms- potentially one of the most powerful organisms on the planet.
With over 1.5 million varieties, the fungi kingdom is home to mushrooms of all types. Some have environmental protecting properties that can break down toxic waste products into compounds that are safer to be in nature. Yes, there are mushrooms out there that can break down in-organic materials such as plastic, diesel, chemical warfare materials, and even nuclear waste (8).
There are other types of mushrooms that are extremely health promoting to humans, and have been extensively studied for their use in medicine (1).With a genetic similarity of 30-50% to human DNA and 80-85% to human RNA, mushrooms are very bioavailable to humans, making them great targets for medicine (2).
Some edible medicinal mushrooms that have been in the scientific spotlight these days are Reishi, Chaga, Cordyceps, and Lion’s Mane. Each of these mushrooms possess unique health promoting properties that will make you question why you haven’t been eating medicinal mushrooms all your life.
Reishi: Known as the Queen of the Fungi, this mushroom has anti-fungal, anti-viral and adaptogenic properties, making it great for helping the body adapt to stress and support against pathogens (3). It also has anti-histaminimic properties, making it great for people with allergies.
Chaga: This mushroom is packed with antioxidants, making it a great anti-inflammatory supplement, as well as an immune supporter. It is often used for digestive issues, and daily support against pathogens (4). Also if you are deficient in minerals such as Iron, Zinc, Potassium or Magnesium, this mushroom is loaded with these essential minerals (8).
Cordyceps: Well known for its benefits in physical and respiratory performance, this mushroom is often used by olympians and other athletes (5). Cordyceps mushrooms have been observed to increase VO2 max by up to 15%, as well as increase ATP production, therefore increasing oxygen delivery and energy production in the body (8).
Lion’s Mane: This one may be our all-time favourite mushroom, as it almost sounds too good to be true. Lion’s Mane is considered a nootropic supplement- meaning it has cognitive enhancing abilities. It has been proven to increase neural networks and nerve growth factor in the brain, which is why it has been utilized in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s treatment (6). It’s also a very useful supplement for students or people working in the knowledge industry, to boost brain function (8).
Our favourite way to consume medicinal mushrooms is by drinking them in Four Sigmatic coffee, hot chocolate, matcha, and elixirs. We drink these on the daily at the Consonant office to keep our immune systems in check, and brains working to their potential. Mushrooms in Skin Care
Mushrooms have shown to exert their benefits in more than just ingestible products, they can also be applied topically in cosmetics and skin care! In fact, certain mushroom strains prove to be incredible for anti-aging and reducing hyperpigmentation (7). For all you skin care nerds out there, the main benefits of mushrooms in skin care products are their anti-tyrosinase, anti-hyaluronidase, anti-collagenase and anti-elastase activity… aka they can decrease discoloration of the skin, increase Hyaluronic Acid production, as well as increase the collagen and elastin networks of the skin (6). On top of this, they pack an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory punch, making them great for a wide variety of skin conditions.
That’s why we formulated our newest Maximum Glycolic Meta Serum with Poria Mushroom, to serve as a soothing and anti-inflammatory agent to the skin (9). Poria Mushroom, along with a few other botanical ingredients in our formulation, is why this serum is one of the least sensitizing AHA products on the market!
As you can see, there are so many reasons why we love these little fungi. What really got us on the mushroom train was Four Sigmatic’s free education program- a free course that teaches you all about the science and health benefits of medicinal mushrooms. If you are a fun-guy or fun-girl and want to get your mushroom kick, you can use the promo-code: CONSONANTONSHROOMS to get 15% off your first mushroom order with Four Sigmatic!
